Hexagram 62

Small Excess

小过 · Xiǎo Guò

Trigram Composition

Upper Trigram

Thunder

Lower Trigram

Mountain

The Judgment (彖)

Small Excess. Success. Perseverance furthers. Small things may be done; great things should not be done. The flying bird brings the message: it is not well to strive upward; it is well to remain below.

The Image (象)

Thunder on the mountain. The superior person in conduct exceeds in reverence, in mourning exceeds in grief, in expenditure exceeds in thrift.

Meaning

Exceed slightly in small matters of conscientiousness — be extra careful, extra humble, extra frugal. But don't attempt anything grand. A bird flying too high has nowhere to land.

Advice

Keep things small and stay low. This is not the time for grand ambitions or soaring flights. Be extra conscientious in small things. Exceed in humility and carefulness rather than in ambition.
