Chinese Naming Principles

Structure: Chinese names are typically 2-3 characters. First character = surname (family name), remaining 1-2 characters = given name. The family name comes first (opposite to Western convention).

Meaning matters: Every character carries deep meaning. Parents carefully choose characters that express their hopes — virtue, nature, wisdom, prosperity, or beauty.

Sound harmony: The tones of the characters should flow well together. Avoid characters with the same tone in sequence. The name should be pleasant to say aloud.

Five Elements: Traditional naming considers the child's BaZi chart. If the chart lacks Water, a name containing Water-element characters (ocean 海, rain 雨, river 河) is chosen to balance the elements.
